CDC 58:12

Affordable housing has always been an issue in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans, but the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina compounded it into a nearly impossible obstacle. So after the storm, Desire Street Ministries partnered with neighborhood residents to form a Christian community development corporation called CDC 58:12. The name is based on a verse from the Bible, Isaiah 58:12.

The CDC focuses on restoring and developing affordable housing for low-to-moderate income families. To date it has successfully completed several home renovation projects and has built capacity to deliver services as a faith-based housing provider.

A partnership with The Concordia Group facilitated a community planning process which produced a model for the neighborhood's redevelopment. Information on area properties and demographics for the planning process was collected by interns working with DSM's New Orleans ministry team. The final community development plan was presented in August 2009. Click on the picture at right to read this exciting plan in it's entirety.

The CDC has a long line of neighbors waiting for assistance with their homes. As funds permit, the CDC has plans to build 10 new homes in the next 3 years and assist others with restoration projects. Homebuyers training classes are required and provided to help residents learn the ropes of purchasing, financing and maintaining their home.

Again as funding permits, CDC 58:12 is also making plans to stimulate economic development opportunities in the Ninth Ward for residents who want to return to New Orleans.
