From Chains to Change

Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly. Philippians 1:14

The Desire Street offices are located in what was once a Civil War debtor’s prison compound. Our “chapel” is a large multipurpose room with striking, huge wood beams, which are now coated with layers of white paint.

If these beams could talk, they’d tell a tale of misery turned to hope.

What was once a blacksmith shop, where men forged chains for each other, is now a home for church activities where men’s hearts are set free. Where there once was misery and human suffering, there are now lunch meetings where people learn about how to get involved in inner-city change and transformation. Once, these beams saw despair and hopelessness, now they see the pursuit of encouragement and hope.

When we enter our chapel, these beams cause us to wonder about the past. And they also remind us, in almost a supernatural way, to speak courageously and fearlessly, participating in what God is doing to release the chains holding urban neighborhoods.
