Today is Good Friday, which is significant to me this year for 2 reasons. One, it happens to be my wife’s birthday (Happy Birthday Jess). Second, well, that one is obvious, though it’s strange that we all call it “good”.
How ironic.
If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance that you understand why the word good is used to refer to an event that seems so horrible—the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. In fact, on that first Good Friday, only a few would have said anything good was going on.
John 18:14 says, “Caiaphas [the high priest that year] was the one who had advised the Jews that it would be good if one man died for the people.”
Little did he know, but that was exactly God’s plan of reconciliation.
When Jesus rose again on the third day, Sunday, a new hope began to spread among his followers. Out of something bad sprung something very good.
For anyone who has experienced this “good news” (Gospel) message in your own heart, you know the transformation that begins to take place in your life.
This same transformation is the one that Desire Street seeks for impoverished neighborhoods and those who are entrapped there by those circumstances. As your mind is led to thoughts about that first Easter and the events before and after, would you please remember to pray for Desire Street…and especially for the Gospel’s encouragement to all those who are working and praying to making a difference.
